Request for Bid: Watsonville Slough Farms Sediment Basins

news 2022 05The RCDSCC invites contractors to bid on the Watsonville Slough Farms Sediment Basins Project, a 1.5 acre sediment basin permitted through the Permit Coordination program (PIR) at the RCD. See documents below. The project will prevent sediment from nearby agricutlural fields from running into the middle watsonville slough.

The Watsonville Slough Farm is owned and operated by the Land Trust of Santa Cruz County.  It has been a working farm for centuries and the Land Trust continues that tradition by continuing to lease the farmland to area farmers.  Agricultural production requires regular disturbance of the soil and this tillage, along with area weather patterns can cause the soil to mobilize and move downslope toward the Watsonville Slough.  The slough is home to a variey of unique plant and animal wildlife and sediment inflows can impair the water quality and degrade the habitat quality.

The sediment basin constructed for this project will detain up to 1,095 cubic yards of sediment.  A portion of an adjoining road will be regraded and a roadside ditch implemented to better convey water from across the road to the basin via a constructed culvert and flume.  An earthen berm will be constructed along with a 24" riser and outlet pipe discharging below the berm.  The basin will also consist of an auxiliary spillway and a graded access ramp within the structure.  See documents below for more details.
