Request for Bid: Aptos Truck Trail Forest Health & Fire Resilience Project

news 2022 05The RCDSCC invites contractors to bid on the Aptos Truck Trail Forest Health & Fire Resilience Project, a 211-acre vegetation management and prescribed fire preparation project permitted through the Santa Rosalia Project Specific Analysis (PSA). See documents below. The project treatment will prepare the Nisene Marks watershed for the reintroduction of prescribed fire, and prepare the Truck Trail as a potential site for fighting future wildfire.

The Nisene Marks watershed has not experienced a large scale fire, either prescribed or wild, since the redwood forest portions were clearcut over 100 years ago. Many fire-adapted ecosystems such as chaparral and hardwood systems occur along the Aptos Truck Trail, with historic fire return intervals ranging from 15 - 75 years. In these systems, occasional fire is necessary to preserve ecosystem function. However, the presence of nearby residential development and an increase in severe fire weather in the past century necessitates that before fire can be safely reintroduced, fire surrogate treatments must be conducted to reduce the risk of extreme fire behavior.

Treatments in the project area will focus on rearranging and reducing downed woody debris, felling dead trees that might pose a hazard to fire personnel during a burn, masticating ladder fuels and understory vegetation to allow safe access to burn units, and removing some live Douglas-fir to mimic more severe fire effects. The goal of this project is to ready the Aptos Truck Trail area for the reintroduction of prescribed fire.
