The project will remove three existing failing and undersized culverts and replace them with a single 67-foot, 42” diameter smooth-walled HDPE pipe placed at a similar alignment and grade.
The existing road fill is unstable and contains logs and debris, as determined by geotechnical assessment and visual inspection of the downstream side of project area, where erosion has exposed the fill material.
The road fill will be removed under supervision of the geotechnical engineer and replaced with compacted engineered fill inclined at a maximum slope of 1.5H:1v. The downstream face of the embankment will be lined with rock facing and backfilled with topsoil and native forest duff salvaged on site. A rock energy dissipater will be installed at the outlet to reduce bank erosion and conform the pipe to the downstream channel. A critical dip will be installed at the margin of the historic fill, discharging onto stable ground at a redwood grove. Local street runoff within existing ditches will be routed to the culvert inlet via protected rock-lined swales. Approximately 100 linear feet of the road will be repaved to improve drainage controls and prevent ongoing slope erosion.
