This stand was burned repeatedly prior to the 1900s through indigenous people’s activities and fire has since been excluded for nearly a century until the CZU Lightning Complex (CZULC). This stand has suffered from drought related conditions and pitch canker, resulting in prime circumstances for the CZULC to cause significant tree mortality. In addition, understory conditions prior to the CZULC were extremely dense with excessive ladder fuels and overstocked stand conditions with trees in some areas in excess of 500 trees per acre in the 2 – 12-inch DBH cohorts. Following the high to very high severity burn conditions from the CZULC, much of the smaller trees that make up the overstocked stand conditions in the project areas remain unconsumed with extremely high mortality rates through all diameter classes.
Treatments in the project area will focus on the removal of trees that are dead or dying, irreversibly diseased, substantially damaged, or an invasive exotic that may be manually or mechanically felled. Following the CZULC, Monterey pine are regenerating at significant rates in areas now void of canopy. A goal of this project is to minimize impacts as much as possible to young Monterey Pine regeneration during ecologically restorative treatments to promote the next generation of Monterey pine following the CZULC.
