Preparing for Post-Fire Changes Along Streams & Waterways (Tue. 22 Sep, 2020 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm)

Part four of the series "Protecting Your Land After Wildfire."

Large wood in streamThe aftermath of wildfire can significantly affect our local creeks and rivers. While erosion is a natural process, the loss of vegetation and soil cover after a fire increases runoff and sediment input to waterways. The rate in which the rain runoff reaches the stream after a fire can exacerbate flooding. Ash and potential harmful waste from burned structures and cars can severely effect quality that both human and animals use for drinking. And loss of tree cover can change water temperature. But there are things we can do to help. Kristen Kittleson, the fisheries resource planner for the County of Santa Cruz will share ways to improve the health of the creeks such as leaving fallen in trees in the stream, protecting bare stream banks and limiting polluted runoff from our properties.
